Two Shari’a court judges sent to prison for stealing ₦580 million

Defection: Court delivers judgement on suit seeking governor Ayade, deputy removal

Two Shari’a court judges in Kano state have been remanded in prison custody over alleged N580.2 million theft.

The duo were remanded by a Magistrates Court in Kano alongside a cashier and 16 other financial registrars, according to News Agency of Nigeria.

The police charged Bashir Kurawa, Saadatu Umar, Tijjani Abdullahi, Maryam Jibrin-Garba, Shamsu Sani and Hussaina Imam with five counts of criminal conspiracy, joint act, criminal breach of trust by a public servant, theft and forgery.

Others are Sani Ali Muhammad, Sani Buba-Aliyu, Bashir Baffa, Garzali Wada, Hadi Tijjani Mu’azu, Alkasim Abdullahi, Yusuf Abdullahi, Mustapha Bala Ibrahim, Jafar Ahmad, Adamu Balarabe, Aminu Abdulkadir, Abdullahi Zango and Garba Yusuf.

Chief magistrate Mustapha Sa’ad-Datti ordered the remand of the defendants and adjourned the matter until February 1 for a hearing.

Prosecution counsel Zahraddeen Kofar-Mata told the court that the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission received an official complaint from the State Ministry of Justice on August 20, 2021.

Kofar-Mata alleged that between 2020 and 2021, Imam used her position as a cashier at the Kano Shari’a Court of Appeal, conspired with four others and another individual, Suleiman, now at large, to forge letterheads of the court.

“The defendants forged the signatures of the two signatories to the Stanbic IBTC bank account 0020667440 belonging to the Kano State Sharia Court of Appeal and stole N484 million,” stated the prosecutor.

Kofar-Mata alleged that the defendants fraudulently authorised the bank to transfer the amount to various bank accounts without the consent of the authorised persons. He also alleged that from 2018 to 2021, the defendants criminally conspired, breached the trust as a public servant, acted jointly and created 15 fake civil servants’ death benefit files and fraudulently siphoned the sum of N96.2 million.

“The N96.2 million was remitted by the Kano State Pension Fund Trustee to the bank accounts of Kano State Sharia Court Appeal. The defendants stole the said amount through eight Sharia courts under the Kano State Sharia Court Appeal without the consent of the authorising authority,” added the prosecutor.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defence counsel, Garzali Datti, prayed the court to exercise its jurisdiction judiciously and admit the defendants on bail

2023 Presidency: Why I endorsed Obi over Tinubu – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he’s a stickler for good virtues and impeccable character and has a soft spot for men who possess such attributes.

He said his decision to throw his weight behind presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, is because of his possession of these valuable attributes.

Obasanjo said Peter Obi deserves the votes of all patriotic Nigerians, saying only the callous and unpatriotic ones would vote for his opponents.

While calling on Nigerians to support Obi, Obasanjo said the reason was because he possesses good characters, which his fellow contestants lack.

Obasanjo spoke on Thursday while featuring in an interactive session organised by the Experiential Leadership in Africa (TEL-Africa) in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Speaking on why he declared his support for Obi against Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obasanjo said “I will be punished by God if I know what is right and I did not put it where it should be.”

He clarified that he mentioned in his letter that Obi has an edge, taking everything together; stating that “I take character, I take track record, I take vision and I take what you see in this man as a child of God.”

He recalled that during his New Year open letter to the youth, he had said he knows the major candidates a little bit and can say a bit about them as their mentor.

“Why should you as a Nigerian vote for somebody with the character, the reputation, the life of which you do not want your own children to be?” Obasanjo asked, stressing that “it is either you are wicked, you are unpatriotic or you are really, really a bad citizen of this country and then if this is who you are, what do you want God to do with you, and that is the way I see it.”

2023: Osinbajo, Buhari not supporting Tinubu, APC govs insincere – Shettima

There are indications that all is not well within the ruling All Progressives Congress hierarchy ahead of next month general election, the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, president, Yerima Shettima, has opined.

Shettima said the absence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the APC, rallies and refusal to openly support him is a pointer to the acrimonious situation among high-ranking members of the ruling party.

Shettima said Tinubu does not deserve the kind of treatment he gets from Osinbajo and president Muhammadu Buhari, noting that there could be a crack within the APC ranks.

“It’s very unfortunate that in recent times things have not been going well, however, Tinubu does not deserve what he’s getting from Osinbajo and Buhari; no matter how bad it is, he has paid his dues and has stood by them. He deserves better than the support they are giving to him” Shettima said in an interview with DAILY POST.

“If they are truly with him, they should demonstrate it, and if they are not, then they should openly come out and say so. When Obasanjo was in power, in 2006, we could see his body language on how he worked day and night to stand by Yar’ Adua.

“He had gone out of his way to campaign for the presidential candidate. Even in the absence of the presidential candidate, Obasanjo was moving around campaigning because he was willing to ensure that his successor come into power.

“This one that the president and the vice president are sitting on the fence, even the governors are not sincere.”

“Some of these APC governors are not sincere, that is why it would be difficult for the APC presidential candidate, Tinubu, to rely on these governors, they may disappoint him because theirs is to negotiate even with the opposition.”

Shettima suggested that Tinubu should liaise and be discussing with Nigerians, CSOs, and organizations and not rely on governors.

He said: “Tinubu has less than five governors with him, the others are just supportive. The earlier he moves and changes strategy, the better for him, Kashim Shettima, and APC.

“Shettima should move and do better than he’s doing in the Northern part of this country, people are not feeling his impact. The 2023 elections [campaigns] have gone beyond propaganda.”

He said pointedly: “There is a crack in APC because Osinbajo has never campaigned, he has never gone anywhere.”

He alleged that the body language of Amaechi and Osinbajo, for instance, tells of a crack in APC.

“I’m calling on Tinubu to rise up to the occasion and not to over-rely on those governors but to get down to the people within this short period and see what will happen. If he’s relying on governors he will be shocked at what will happen. He should change strategy and method by ensuring all his followers are on their feet; and for Osinbajo, he has shown that he’s not with Tinubu,” he said.

Tinubu contested APC primary with fake identity, credentials – Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare In Trouble Over Inability To Repay ₦9bn Wema Loan Used To Build Church
Pastor Tunde Bakare

The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Tuesday, said he’s proud of his performance during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential primary election.

He said this in reaction to critics who opposed his state-of-the-nation address on Sunday, where he berated and dressed down the party’s candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Bakare said he lost in a dignified manner, noting that he scored zero in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC primary with true identity, original credentials.

He said, “Can someone tell these people that scoring zero in a primary election with one’s true identity and integrity intact as well having original credentials from well-known schools:

“Primary, Secondary, colleges and University within and outside of this nation is a veritable badge of honor, absolutely legit and unquestionable? Please tell them that in the words of Michel De Montaigne.”

Bakare had advised Nigerians to shun those promoting ‘emilokan’, a term associated with Tinubu and which means “my turn” in Yoruba.

He added that no good politician seeking the votes of the people would evade public debates and also task his team members with the task of answering questions specifically directed at him.

But in a swift reaction, the Presidential Campaign Council PCC of the All Progressives Congress, APC, had described Bakare as a political paperweight whose utterances should not be given serious thought.

“Bakare got zero votes at the convention”, said Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Director, Special Media Projects/New Media at the PCC.

Also reacting, the Special Adviser, Media, Communications and Public Affairs at the PCC, Mr Dele Alake said the cleric is a political neophyte.

Responding to critics, Bakare said, “Why are they then giving any thought to what I said? May be their alleged “paper weight” is too heavy for them to carry.

“There are some defeats more triumphant than victories.” One of the Special Advisers that I thought had some semblance of nobility had to utter outright lies and falsehoods to satisfy his paymaster. He said that I did a video asking members of our church to vote for their candidate and then turn around to ask them not to vote for him.

“Unfortunately, there is no such video containing such falsehood. The abridged video these people are sending around is from a message preached here (Citadel Global Community Church) in 2020 with the title: “An idle man’s brain is the devil’s workshop.” I made it clear in the video that I did not endorse their candidate’s lifestyle, business or type of politics.

“In the said video, I never asked our members to vote or not vote for their candidate or any other candidate. By the way, our members are not zombies. They, by the grace of God, have their own minds and will decide who to vote for on Election Day. As for those whose stock in trade is lying against others and fabricating stories that are not true about them, our strong consolation is that their DNA and the final destination are spelt out in the Bible. See Psalm 58:3-8. “The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies…”

“Rest assured, I will take the vicious attacks of these political merchants in my stride, because I know that according to Voltaire: “Many are destined to reason wrongly, others not to reason at all and some to persecute those who do reason

Serena Williams undergoes baptism to become Jehovah’s Witness

Tennis legend, Serena Williams, has been baptised as a Jehovah’s Witness.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion was baptized on Sunday as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Sunday, heralding a religious shift and monumental moment for the recently retired tennis great.

The baptism took place at the Jehovah’s Witness Assembly in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Serena who announced her exit from the court last year September had earlier expressed her desire to focus on her family and faith after quitting the game.

She is renowned for her outstanding achievement in her career that spanned over two decades-winning 23 grand slam titles, the most by any player in the open era and second-most of all time.

“Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practiced it and have been wanting to get into it.” – Serena had said in an interview

Nasarawa doctor collapses while performing surgery, dies of Lassa fever

One Ahmed Isaiah, a medical doctor, has died of lassa fever in Nasarawa state.

Members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in the north central State held a procession for the deceased in Lafia on Tuesday

The doctor died on Dec. 31, 2022, at the National Hospital, Abuja, NMA chairman in the state, Dr Peter Attah, disclosed.

He confirmed that the deceased Dr Isaiah, died of job hazard-related issues, specifically, Lassa fever.

“As an association, we got information when he was already dead but from our investigation, the sickness started like a fever, but he kept working even when he was on treatment.

“While on call on Dec. 24, 2022, he collapsed at the theatre while carrying out surgery on a patient and his family had to rush him to the National Hospital, Abuja.

“Unfortunately, we lost him,’’ Attah said.

He added that a post-mortem confirmed that Dr Isaiah died of Lassa fever.

Attah lamented that the deceased had to go to work and tried to carry out surgery on a patient even when he was sick as there were only two medical personnel at the General Hospital, Garaku, Nasarawa State at that time.

“How can only two doctors handle an entire local government area of more than 150,000 population? Obviously, the workload was too much.

“Government should employ more doctors and introduce incentives to curtail brain drain in the state,’’ he said.

Attah added that the deceased who graduated five years ago died in his prime and left behind a wife, children and loved ones.

The NMA chairman urged the Nasarawa State government to also increase hazard allowances for doctors and should immediately begin the payment of call duty allowances.

Atiku will sell your birthright, Obi will save your money – Tinubu

2023: Tinubu Reveals Who He Will Hand Over To If Elected President
APC National Chairman, Bola Tinubu.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has warned Nigerians that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, would sell the nation’s assets to the highest bidder, if voted in as Nigerian president.

The former governor also noted that his Labour Party’s counterpart, Peter Obi would rather save money and allow the people to go hungry.

Tinubu made this known while speaking on Saturday at Democracy Park in Akure, the Ondo State capital, during APC rally, adding that neither city-dwellers nor farmers prospered while Obi was the governor of Anambra State.

Tinubu said the former Vice President (Atiku) cared less that his policies and action would impoverish the people.

He said: “On February 25, I know you will be a champion of progressive politics again. That date represents for the nation and for each and every one of us an appointment with destiny.

“We not only must make that appointment, we must emerge from the appointment fully dedicated to creating a more prosperous, safer, tolerant and dynamic society.

“But these things do not come by accident. These things are but some of the fruits that only progressive and democratic good governance can harvest. And that progressive governance can only be brought to you by someone who has governed in a progressive manner before

“Atiku doesn’t want to do the brave and hard work required to build a better nation. Instead, he would rather sell your birthright to the highest bidder and run off with the proceeds.

“He cares little that his policies and actions will impoverish you and leave you with nothing.”

The former Lagos state Governor stressed that Obi had a chance to show how progressive he could be when he was governor of Anambra State.

Tinubu noted that Nigerians cannot entrust their future in the hands of Atiku who is ready to sell the nation’s assets or Obi who was known to be stingy.

2023 Presidency: Three of G5 governors back Obi – Ex-Rivers Commissioner

A former commissioner in Rivers State has revealed that three out of the five aggrieved and rebellious governors of the Peoples Democratic Party have decided to pitch their tent with Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi for the 2023 election.

Better known as G5, the governors, who are currently meeting in London to reach a consensus on which presidential candidate to throw their weight behind ahead of next year’s polls, have been at daggers drawn with their party for breaching the zoning arrangement for political offices.

The ex-Rivers commissioner, who spoke in confidence, according to NAN, made the revelation while briefing some reporters in Abuja on Wednesday.

The source confirmed that the agitation by the G5 governors is now hinged on power shift to the South in accordance with the Lagos declaration by the southern governors.

The source mentioned that while three out of the five governors rooting for the LP presidential candidate are spurred by Obi’s impeccable and sterling records, the other two are being careful because their choice could have a good or horrific impact on their political survival.

She stated: “You know the Presidential contest is like a beauty contest, where only the registered participants are considered. The G5 governors agree that Obi is not a saint, but comes with fresher characteristics than the other candidates.

“In the first place, it was these contrasting qualities, plus Muslim-Muslim ticket that attracted the mass following among major electoral demography, the youths, across the length and breadth of the country for Obi.

“So, I can tell you authoritatively, the three governors in support of Obi are contending that although APC has spread, it will be disastrous and suicidal if they support Tinubu with awkward ticket against their people, majority of who are for Obi.

“The three governors are therefore mindful of Electoral Act 2022 and the enormous powers and independence it has given to the electorate.”

Transfer: Ronaldo joins Real Madrid after Portugal’s World Cup exit

After Portugal’s World Cup elimination by Morocco, Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Spain to reunite with his former club, Real Madrid.

The la Liga giant granted Ronaldo permission to train with them pending the time he will get a new club.

The 37-year-old is currently clubless after his contract with Manchester United was terminated last month.

However, Ronaldo is training with Madrid to keep fit before he signs for a new club.

This was revealed by football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.

Romano tweeted on Wednesday: “Cristiano Ronaldo has trained at Real Madrid sporting center Valdebebas in the last hours — on a separated pitch.

“As revealed by @relevo/@hugocerezo, Cristiano’s just working there to keep his form thanks to great relationship with the club, waiting for new chapter.

Ronaldo has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club, Al-Nassr.

I don’t want Messi to win World Cup – Ronaldo

Former Brazil star Ronaldo De Lima has tipped France to win the ongoing World Cup ahead of Argentina.

Ronaldo said he cannot in good conscience get behind his country’s great sporting rivals Argentina at the World Cup.

Lionel Messi likely has one final chance to lift the only major trophy missing from his collection, but Ronaldo will not be rooting for the South Americans in Tuesday’s semi-final against Croatia.

“I’m not going to be a hypocrite and say I’ll be happy for Argentina” if they win the World Cup, said Ronaldo. “But I see football as a romantic. And I will appreciate any champion.”

“Since the beginning, my prediction has always been Brazil and France in the final,” the two-time World Cup winner told media including AFP at a roundtable in Doha.

“Brazil are no longer there. But France, match after match, are backing up their status as favourites and I still see them as the big favourites.”

Ronaldo, who scored both goals in the 2002 World Cup final against Germany, expects France to see off surprise semi-finalists Morocco on Wednesday.

“I would really like (Morocco to win) but I don’t think they will. I think France have a very solid team, whether it’s in defence, attack or midfield,” said the twice former Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo has in particular been impressed by Kylian Mbappe, the tournament’s leading scorer in Qatar with five goals.

“He knows how to use his skills, how to go faster than the others. And he uses them to give assists or to score,” said Ronaldo, who expects the 23-year-old Mbappe to shatter numerous records.

“He has the time, the skills, he’s thirsty and he has the talent to conquer it all, that’s for sure.”

Ronaldo paid tribute to Morocco’s performances after the Atlas Lions became the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final and the first Arab team to do so.

“It’s a great football story that an African team is in the semi-finals of a World Cup,” he said. “I saw the reactions in Morocco, what football gives us is very beautiful.”

2023 presidency: We must grab power at all cost, Tinubu charges supporters

2023: Tinubu Reveals Who He Will Hand Over To If Elected President
APC National Chairman, Bola Tinubu.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 elections, Bola Tinubu has rallied his political troops to use whatever means necessary to achieve their political ambition.

In a viral video of him addressing some persons believed to be party faithfuls, Tinubu charged top campaigners to stop at nothing and go for the jugular. “fight”, “grab” and “run [away] with” political power, Tinubu bellowed at the audience while speaking in London.

He has remained in the United Kingdom after attending a Chatham House engagement earlier in the week.

“Political power is not going to be served in a restaurant. They don’t serve it a la carte. At all cost, fight for it, grab it and run with it,” Mr Tinubu said.

Since his emergence as Lagos governor in 1999,  Tinubu has maintained a stranglehold on the politics of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

After he left office in 2007, Tinubu continues to use all sort of crude, devious, ruthless and diabolical means, which include sudden death of formidable opponents and use of violence to scuttle voting in opposition stronghold, in order to maintain his hegemony over the state.

While his supporters and admirers hailed tactics as a testament of his political sagacity opposition says the former governor methods have stifled democracy in the state and impeded its growth.

The APC flag bearer is seen as the leading candidate for next year’s polls but he faces stiff competition from veteran contestant and former vice president Atiku Abubakar. Peter Obi, a former Anambra governor, is also showing promises of a strong showing in the election which some analysts say might be largely influenced by ethno-religious sentiments.

Shettima planned Chibok girls abduction to humiliate Jonathan – PDP

PDP says Shettima behind Chibok girls abduction

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said former Borno State governor, Kassim Shettima, frustrated efforts by former president, Goodluck Jonathan, to address security crisis in the state.

The party said this in reaction to the recent visit of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, and his vice, Shettima, to Jonathan.

In statement by its national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Thursday, The opposition party said Shettima was privy to the Chibok girls abduction before its occurrence.

PDP said the appointment of the principal of the school where Chibok girls were abducted showed that Shettima had a hand the abduction.

The statement read “Nigerians can equally recall how Sen. Shettima as governor of Borno State sabotaged and frustrated Jonathan’s administration in its effort to curb insecurity in Borno State.

” Records still have it on how the APC Vice Presidential candidate as governor of Borno State failed to act on a security report and directive to close schools in remote parts of Borno State and relocate students to the more secure capital of Maiduguri to write their GCE examinations; thus creating the opening for the cruel abduction of school girls in Chibok, Borno State.

“Nigerian will also note how the then Governor Shettima abdicated his duty as chief security officer and reportedly withheld vital security information in preference to non-state actors including terrorist elements, thereby frustrating the timely rescue of the abducted Chibok girls.

“It can also be recalled that after the infamous abduction, the principal of the school was subsequently appointed as a commissioner in Borno State by the then Governor Shettima; a development many considered as compensation for her alleged role in the abduction.

“It is therefore ironic that these same APC leaders who also spent the last seven years insulting and harassing Dr. Jonathan now shamelessly arranged a visit and photo opportunity in an attempt to launder their image and hoodwink Nigerians from the atrocities and monumental evil they brought to our country.

“What is expected of APC leaders at this moment is to apologize unreservedly to Dr. Jonathan, the PDP and Nigerians for the life-discounting situation they have foisted on our nation in the last seven years. After that they should quietly quit the stage, take valedictory pictures with terrorists, political thugs and election riggers since they cannot have any space among well-meaning Nigerians”

Pandemonium in Plateau as youths riot over plan to enthrone emir

Riot in Plateau over planned installation of emir

There was palpable trepidation in Yelwa, a community in the Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State as irate youths went on rampage over alleged plots to create an Emirate in the locality.

The area was thrown into a full blown melee on Friday over the allegation which is levelled against the Simon Lalong-led administration.

Plateau is predominantly Christian state with a long and frightful history of ethno-religious skirmishes.

A clutch of marauding youths, agitated by the rumours, stormed the palace of the traditional ruler, Long Goemai of Shendam, and vandalised it.

According to peoples gazette, Many shops and buildings were also looted in the riot.

The development was a topical issue among the locals, who took to community-focused Facebook pages, WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms, to lampoon the government.

Plangkat Milaham, socio-political commentator, posted: “Lalong plans to do something controversial. He leaks the information to test people’s reaction, so he can decide whether to go ahead or not. (politics 101).

The reaction he gets is very negative. He sends his boys to blame the opposition party & tag it “PDP propaganda”.

Posting on Twitter with the handle @yitkyim, a legal practitioner said: “So I’m hearing Lalong messed up (but it’s as usual if you know what I mean) one will expect that commissioner of information and press secretary would be having a tough time trying to come with a defense right? But no! I’m sure it’s ICT WhatsApp group brainstorming now.”

The government has, however, debunked the report, calling it the machination and imagination of mischief makers.

In a statement made available to Peoples Gazette by the Commissioner of Information and Communication, Dan Manjang, he urged citizens of the state to turn a deaf ear to the unfounded story.

“The Government wishes to put it on record that there has never been any time that such idea was contemplated or even discussed. To say the least, this is the imagination and machination of mischief makers aimed at throwing the State into the dark old days thereby drawing the hands of the clock backwards and making nonsense of the peace we have achieved since the coming of the rescue administration ably led by His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Simon Bako Lalong, KSGG,” the statement read.

While relative normalcy has returned to Yelwa and environ, the government urged people to go about their normal business.

“Government hereby beckons on the general public particularly residents of Shendam Local Government to be circumspect and go about their normal duties by disregarding such dangerous rumours and providing timely information to security agencies to enable them act swiftly,” the statement added.

Guests Receive Peter Obi At Wedding Reception With Tinubu’s Anthem

Drama as guests ushered Peter Obi into wedding reception with Tinubu’s anthem

There was a mild confusion at a wedding over the weekend when Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, was welcomed into the reception by the guests with a song normally crooned by supporters of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The song, which associates of Tinubu refer to as his anthem, is used to underscore the imminent actualisation of his presidential ambition.

The anthem is usually chanted in gatherings where political allies of the APC Presidential Candidate honour him.

<em>On your mandate we shall stand, on your mandate we shall stand, Bola, on your mandate, Bola, on your mandate, on your mandate, we shall stand</em>, are the words of the anthem.

However, when Obi, who is fast gaining popularity, especially among young people, in the build up to the 2023 elections, walked into a wedding reception in Lagos, the atmosphere got charged.

Immediately the MC announced his arrival, the wedding guests rushed to take pictures with him, while the band changed its song to Tinubu’s anthem, but without mentioning the name of Obi’s rival in the presidential race.

A Twitter user simply identified as Dave shared a a video of the incident with the caption: “Someone was mobbed at a wedding in Lagos yesterday.”

The video has been widely shared by supporters of Obi known as #Obidients on social media.

Recently, Tinubu and Obi engaged in a war of words.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his campaign spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, had warned Obi to call his supporters to order and allow the 2023 general election to be about issues that will advance the growth, progress, and stability of Nigeria.

He asked Obi to stop his supporters from “spreading lies, malice and denigrating other candidates”.

Reacting, in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Valentine Obienyem, Obi said some of his opponents originated fake news, published them under false names and ascribed them to him or his supporters.

“Nigerians know the truth and that such gimmicks used to deceive them would no longer work,” he added.

Why 243 soldiers resigned – Nigerian Army

Why 243 soldiers resigned – Army
Nigerian Army has revealed why 243 soldiers resigned

The Nigerian Army has cleared the air on the deluge of resignations that hit the institution recently.

Some 243 soldiers were said to have resigned from the the army owing to entrenched corruption and low spirit.

The army also confirmed the development, saying it recently approved the disengagement of a Warrant Officer and 242 others in various formations across the country.

It, however, debunked reports that the mass voluntary retirement of its personnel was triggered by corruption within the military top brass or appalling conditions of service.

The army made the clarification in a statement issued on Saturday by its Director of Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.

In the statement titled ‘Voluntary Retirement Or Discharge Is A Routine In The Nigerian Army’, It noted that voluntary retirement was a routine in the army and, therefore, not linked to low morale or corruption.

Why 243 soldiers resigned – Army

It partly read, “The allegation that soldiers of the Nigerian Army are proceeding on voluntary retirement due to alleged corruption, poor service conditions and low morale as recently reported by some media outfits in the social media is nothing but a concoction of the imagination of the unrepentant enemies of the nation and mischief makers and should be outrightly discountenanced by the public.

“The subjective and unethical report is a distraction and another failed attempt at dampening the morale and fighting will of the loyal, dedicated and patriotic fighting force of the NA.

“Perhaps these impenitent mischief makers need to be schooled to understand that the NA is not a conscript Army and that recruitment into the NA is voluntary with extant policy on discharge and retirement of soldiers and officers respectively, like other organizations.

“This provides its personnel the opportunity to apply for voluntary discharge, when they deem fit and meet the terms and conditions as
stipulated in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service soldiers/ratings/airmen (Revised) 2017.

“It is thus, the inalienable right of a personnel to voluntarily or on medical grounds apply for discharge, if they meet the terms. It is therefore not an aberration that the COAS granted approval for 91 NA/32/4792 WO NDAGANA ISHIAKU and 242 others to voluntarily discharge from the NA, as being unprofessionally manipulated by some media.”

2023 Election: Why I won’t support Atiku, PDP for presidency – Obasanjo

Shehu Sani: What Obasanjo Told Me When We Were Sentenced To Life Imprisonment
Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo

Obasanjo says he will not support Atiku and PDP in next year’s election

Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed why he can’t throw his weight behind Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for next year’s presidential election.

Obasanjo said he can’t in good conscience rally round the PDP after choosing Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

He said the opposition party should have zoned its presidential ticket to the south as it’s the turn of the region to produce Nigeria’s next president.

The former President, who was the Nigerian leader between 1999 and 2007 with Atiku as Vice President, has not openly declared his support for any candidate.

Atiku and Obasanjo had an acrimonious relationship during their presidency.

Obasanjo once said he regrets choosing Atiku as his running mate ahead of the 1999 presidential election, saying, “One of the mistakes I made was picking my Number Two when I wanted to become the president. But because it was a genuine mistake, God saved me.”

But speaking at his Hilltop home in Abeokuta on Wednesday while meeting with the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, Obasanjo flayed the PDP for jettisoning the existing agreement of the party by choosing Atiku from Adamawa State in Northern Nigeria when according to him, it is the turn of the Southern region to produce the next president.

According to the former president, the PDP’s decision is not politically correct and is against the spirit of the understanding between Northern and Southern Nigeria.

PM News quoted Obasanjo as saying, “I am very much aware that it’s the turn of the South to produce the next President of Nigeria. I was part of the meeting when the agreement was made between Northern and Southern leaders.

“I am even surprised PDP gave her ticket to another Northern candidate.

“It will be an injustice to the South if the North retains power after eight years of rule. We will do the right thing when the time comes.”

Dambazau, military hierarchy planned to overthrow Jonathan’s govt in 2010 – General Kukasheka Usman

JUST IN: Jonathan finally joins APC, to submit presidential nomination forms Thursday
General Kukasheka Usman says there was plan to overthrow Jonathan’s govt in 2010

A retired Nigerian Army general has revealed that a military coup was in the offing at the height of the political tension and uncertainty that enveloped the country during the short-lived Umaru Yar Adua presidency.

At some point during his presidency, Yar Adua became so sick that he was incapacitated to do his job as president of the country. He spent months outside the country receiving treatment while a subdued Goodluck Jonathan was left at the helms of the country’s affair.

Yar Adua absence and Jonathan’s lack of needed charisma, influence and political capital created a power vacuum, leading to the invocation of doctorine of necessity by some influential Nigerians which subsequently forced the national assembly to swear Jonathan in as acting president.

Kukasheka Usman, a brigadier-general disclosed that the military hierarchy led by then-Chief of Army Staff Abdulrahman Dambazau attempted a coup d’état to overthrow President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010.

The revelation further lends credence to widespread notion at the time, of reluctance of the military to support the emergence of a president from one of Nigeria’s minority ethnic groups.

It also laid bare frightening shadow of a diabolical power play that loomed over the country’s first president from a minority ethnic group.

Kukasheka Usman, who was army spokesman until his voluntary retirement in 2019, said he was part of a closed group of officers who worked with Dambazau to contain the violent overthrow that was brewing among the military top brass.

“When we visited 44 Reference Hospital, Kaduna, people were asking when is the announcement going to be made about taking over the government. I’m so happy General Akinyemi, the GOC 3 Armoured Division, is still alive. You can ask him,” Mr Usman said while speaking at the 2022 Blueprint Newspapers Annual Public Lectures and Impact Awards on Tuesday in Abuja.

Usman said Mr Dambazau did not execute the coup largely due to his vaunted patriotism and pleas of foreign diplomats.

“The international community showed concern to the extent that they had to meet with him, where he promised that he will not take over the government,” Mr Usman said.

He said some politicians were also involved in the botched coup moves, which had reached an advanced stage that only a “phone call” from Dambazau would have been enough to set things in motion.

“A simple phone call to him (General Akinyemi) to roll out the tanks and General Dambazau would have been head of state, but he resisted that temptation,” the retired brigadier-general claimed. Mr Akinyemi, a retired major-general, led the armoured division in Jos for several years.

“I am saying this with every sense of responsibility because, at that time, the same group of politicians were the ones lobbying him to take over government unconstitutionally. We have the records, and when he started writing the memoir, with due respect to him, I told him that he had to mention the names of the individuals so that posterity will remember them for who they are,” Mr Usman added.

But despite publicly admitting to being privy to the coup moves, Usman did not say whether or not Jonathan was informed about it, or how the matter was handled.

He was also silent on how the officers who prepared the purported coup and demanded a timeline of an announcement were treated, indicating Dambazau and the larger military leadership at the time might have shielded the officers from treason charges.

Discussing a coup is a criminal offence that should ordinarily attract a court-martial, as it is considered a grave threat to national security.

Whereas Usman claimed Dambazau had respect for the Nigerian Constitution and its democratic stipulations, the former chief of army staff was widely known to be contemptuous of the former president.

In 2010, Dambazau deployed Nigerian troops across Abuja and shut down the capital city’s only international airport without informing Jonathan, who was the acting president at the time. Dambazau took the action to secretly bring an ailing President Umar Yar’Adua into the country.

Yar’Adua died a few days later on May 5, 2010, and Jonathan fired Mr Dambazau in September 2010, months after he asserted full control of power.

Gani Adams makes damming verdict on Nigeria unity

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has said the future of Nigeria looks bleak and troubling, stressing that the sovereignty of the country is under threat.

The Yoruba Generalissimo, who noted that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder, said the country is headed for the rock if it refuses to restructure.

Adam said this at the 2022 leadership retreat of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, in Osogbo, Osun State.

He averred that Nigeria must be restructured to address the deepening security crisis that plagues it and also to fit its multi-lingual and ethnic nature.

He added that time is right for the political class to reintroduce the 1960 and 1963 constitutions if it wants to pilot the country on the path of progress and development.

Generalissimo of Yorubaland said: “One of the reasons we are having insecurity challenge is because we have refused to use a structure that fits our population, our strength as a nation and our diversity. We are talking about 254 ethnic nationalities and about 70 languages. In a country like that, you can’t run just federal police and think the country will be properly policed.

“In my opinion, we should go back to the basic, the 1960 constitution that we used to get independence, which we agree together to use to build the country. We can also look at the 1963 constitution, which provides for three layers of Police. Look at Amotekun, for instance, it cannot wield sophisticated weapons, while the criminal they are combating wields so many of such weapons.

“If the Federal Government cares about the security of lives and property of its citizens, we must restructure the security architecture to reflect multi-layer policing. The lawmakers that jettisoned the issue of state police during the constitutional review are now running from the federal capital that housed the seat of the parliament due to fear of their security.

Gani Adams: Nigeria will cease to exist in two years if...

“If Nigeria does not act fast to restructure the country back to regionalism, it may break in two years, because the way it is going, it is becoming unbearable for the people. Traditional rulers are kidnapped and killed across the country, then ordinary residents are no longer safe. “

Alleged organ harvesting: Why we can’t help Ekweremadu – Nigeria govt

Nigeria government reveals why it can’t dabble into Ekweremadu case in UK

The federal government says it cannot wade into the case of alleged organ harvesting involving Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy president of the senate and the United Kingdom government.

The former deputy senate president and Beatrice, his wife, are facing charges bordering on conspiracy to arrange/facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

The couple was arrested by the London Metropolitan Police in June and appeared before a magistrate court in July.

Ekweremadu’s wife was granted bail on July 22, while the lawmaker’s application was denied.

Speaking at a ministerial briefing on Thursday, Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), said it is not the government does not intervene in judicial matters, whether local or international.

“It has never been the tradition of the Nigerian government to interfere in anything judicial, local or international. And that stands the position of the government,” he said.

“On the issue of the intervention on senator Ekweremadu. I have stated in the course of my presentation, that there have been in existence, mutual legal assistance requests and collaboration between Nigeria and other countries across the world. So, to this end, I want to state that we will address the request if there is such a request, both on the part of senator Ekweremadu.

“I can remember very well, there was a request, which was passed through my office but sealed and meant for delivery to the crime agency in the UK at the instance of the distinguished senator, which request I am not in a position to comment on because what relates to my office was a simple transmission.

“In view of the fact that the transmission of international documents is a function of a department central authority unit in the office of the attorney-general and on the request of senator Ekweremadu, an agency of government was asked to respond to certain inquiries, they did, and under seal, they presented their default which was transmitted to the UK accordingly.

“So, the implication of what I’m trying to state in essence is we have mutual legal assistance, understanding with the UK, and whichever of the agencies, either the senator as an accused or suspect or indeed the agencies in the UK, make any request for international support, we will respond accordingly.

“But as far as interest as to the federal government is concerned, it is not a matter over which we can develop any interest. Perhaps maybe, if there are interests, the interests should be rooted in law. For example, relating to the child in contention, you know, we have child rights, among others”
